DESCRIPTION:We need to think about the intersection of climate change and housing beyond our HVAC systems. \nHow does climate change affect housing costs\, particularly in the face of growing migration? \nHow does housing affect climate change\, particularly as we seek to build new units? How can changes to zoning laws affect greenhouse gas emissions and save trees? \nDan Ruben teaches Sustainable Hospitality and Sustainable Tourism at Boston University and the University of Southern Maine. He wrote the textbook\, “Sustainable Hospitality.” \nDan founded a sustainable hotel organization\, Boston Green Tourism\, in 2005 and led it until 2019. In that role\, he organized over 100 sustainable hotel workshops and webinars for local\, state\, and U.S. hoteliers. Dan was the 2014 Sustainable Lodging Person of the Year. Boston Green Tourism earned an EPA Environmental Merit Award. \nPreviously\, Dan was the executive director of the Coalition for Environmentally Responsible Conventions\, which implemented environmental best practices at the 2004 Democratic and Republican National Conventions. CERC won the international Environmentally Responsible Meeting Award and two EPA awards. \nDan is the Chair of Green Newton. He leads its Building Standards Committee which persuaded developers to build Passive House\, all-electric\, low embodied carbon developments\, and persuaded the City of Newton to upgrade its sustainability requirements for new buildings.

Change is constant\, as climate itself continues to demonstrate\, so can we humans still make transitions quickly enough? Whatever your climate concern\, whatever activist community\, we hope you will appreciate this well-informed yet frank assessment\, informed both by faith and first principles.\n\n\nAbout Fred Davis: From the 1970s Energy Crisis to today’s Climate Emergency\, both as a professional and an advocate\, Fred has been a leader in clean energy. In the past decade\, he has been at the forefront of communities transitioning toward a low-carbon future\, decarbonizing with heatpumps\, solar\, and electric vehicles. \nFred ran his business wholesaling energy-efficient lighting products\, and was a leader in that field. He helped devise the first national standards for lamp efficiency and chaired the first national conference on energy-efficient lighting. He helped introduce the world to compact fluorescent light bulbs\, to electronic ballasts\, and to efficient LED products.\n\nIn both municipal and faith-based communities\, Fred has been active as an organizer driving community decarbonization. As member\, then Chair 2019-22\, of Medfield Energy Committee\, he helped to effect solar and efficiency projects\, implement a climate action plan\, and promote the potential for net-zero in the massive redevelopment of a historic state hospital campus. \nAs the top energy expert at Jewish Climate Action Network\, and President since 2022\, he’s been helping to lead over 120 synagogues and their congregants toward decarbonization. Fred devised curriculum ideally suited for volunteer green teams\, and mounted impactful programs such as Solar for Synagogues\, and Accelerating Heatpumps. \nFred also currently serves on the Board of MCAN (Massachusetts Climate Action Network)\, and the Program Committee of NESEA’s Building Energy Conference. DESCRIPTION:With summer air conditioning season underway\, let’s discuss: what makes MA electricity costs so high? Rates in this state are about twice the national average. Is that because we consume less? Because we have the best energy programs? \nHow can we respond\, in personal choices\, as well as with policy changes? And how do high rates impact the state’s transition to heat pumps and electric vehicles\, essential for climate? \nElectricity providers may soon offer time-varying electric rates with new electric meters now being installed.  Shifting when we use electricity could reduce power grid peaks\, lower electric rates for everyone\, and allow some high-emitting peak power stations to be closed permanently. Heat pumps and EVs would become more financially compelling\, benefiting the climate. \nBut will these new rates benefit justice communities?  Are they too complicated? Or might new AI-enabled apps and devices make this easier to do? Let’s consider the possibilities. \nAbout Harvey Michaels \n  \nHarvey Michaels\, a member of JCAN’s “Legs and Regs” committee\, will lead the discussion\, following some introductory material.  He serves as Lecturer of Energy Management Innovation within MIT’s Sloan Sustainability program\, and also advises energy and climate policymakers on electric rate innovations and utility energy efficiency policies.
