SUMMARY:2026 Northeast Miniforest Summit
DESCRIPTION:Overview\n\n\n\nA multi-day gathering bringing together those planting\, studying\, and supporting miniforests across the Northeast U.S. and beyond. \n\n\n\n\nThe 2026 Northeast Miniforest Summit is a multi-day gathering bringing together the people planting\, studying\, stewarding\, teaching\, measuring\, and documenting miniforests across the Northeast U.S. and beyond to share experiences\, exchange knowledge\, and explore emerging questions through presentations\, panel discussions\, and community conversations. \nBringing together practitioners\, researchers\, educators\, landscape architects\, municipal leaders\, and community organizers\, the Summit creates space to share experiences\, exchange knowledge\, and learn from projects unfolding across diverse ecological and social contexts. \nBuilding on the momentum of the inaugural 2025 Summit\, this year’s program includes two virtual half-days\, an in-person bus tour of Massachusetts miniforests\, and a special pre-Summit screening of filmmaker Angelina Lee’s documentary Making a Mini-Forest. \nThe Summit will feature keynote presentations by Ethan Tapper\, forester and author of How to Love a Forest\, and Mio Urata\, a leading practitioner of the Miyawaki Method in Japan. \nGrounded in curiosity\, collaboration\, and care for place\, the Summit brings together a growing network of people working to restore ecological function\, strengthen community stewardship\, and deepen relationships with the living systems that sustain us. \nLearn more at miniforests.bio4climate.org \nSchedule: \n\nVirtual Documentary Screening: July 15\nIn-Person Bus Tour: Saturday\, July 18\nVirtual Summit Day 1: Wednesday\, July 22\nVirtual Summit Day 2: Thursday\, July 23\n\nWho Should Attend? \nPractitioners\, researchers\, educators\, students\, landscape architects\, municipal leaders\, nonprofit professionals\, and community members interested in miniforests\, ecological restoration\, urban forestry\, and community stewardship. \nWhat is the Miyawaki Method? \nDeveloped by Japanese ecologist Dr. Akira Miyawaki\, the Miyawaki Method creates dense\, diverse miniforests using native trees and shrubs. By preparing the soil and planting at high density\, these forests can establish quickly—even in urban environments—supporting biodiversity\, improving soil health\, retaining water\, cooling neighborhoods\, and creating opportunities for community stewardship. \nThis event is organized by Biodiversity for a Livable Climate. For more information\, visit miniforests.bio4climate.org or email miniforests@bio4climate.org with any questions. \nAbout Biodiversity For a Livable Climate \nFor more than a decade\, Biodiversity for a Livable Climate has worked to raise awareness about the vital role of biodiversity and nature-based solutions in regulating the Earth’s climate. \nA pioneer of the Miyawaki Method in the United States\, the organization helped bring this approach to New England\, launching the region’s first miniforest in 2021 in collaboration with SUGi and the City of Cambridge. Since then\, it has supported the planting of eight miniforests across Massachusetts\, demonstrating how this approach can take root across diverse urban sites. In 2025\, Bio4Climate convened the inaugural Northeast Miniforest Summit—mobilizing a regional network of practitioners to exchange knowledge\, build relationships\, and support the continued emergence of miniforests across the region.

SUMMARY:Tisha B’Av Gathering (Hosted by JCAN-MA) - PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE
DESCRIPTION:As the sun sets on Tisha B’Av\, the most sorrowful day on the Jewish calendar\, we will gather to read Eicha (Lamentations)—an ancient text mourning the catastrophic destruction of Jerusalem 2\,500 years ago: its women\, children\, animals\, buildings\, gates\, and walls. \nTogether\, we will take turns reading from the text (bring your phone to follow along)\, and reflect on its relevance today. \nIn this era of climate chaos—of floods\, fires\, and mass displacement—we feel the destruction anew. Tisha B’Av offers us a moment to grieve not only the ruins of the past\, but also the devastation happening now across the globe:\nGaza\, Lebanon\, Haiti\, Venezuela\, Congo\, Sudan\, Yemen\, Nigeria\, Syria—and here\, in the United States. \nAs we mourn\, we renew our resolve to take action. The anguished poetry of Lamentations can inspire us to support policies and practices that prevent further harm to our communities and our planet. \nWe are each part of the long\, sacred labor of healing and repair. We refuse to look away. \nLet us grieve together. Let us strengthen one another. Let us repair the world. \nSchedule \nPlease note\, this event is now on Wednesday\, July 22. We apologize for the confusion! \n🌊 6:00 PM – Potluck Dinner (Come early (at 4 pm for a swim!))\n📖 8:00 PM – 9 PM Reading of Lamentations and Individual Reflection \nRSVP Required \nPlease email Janet at jcan.intern@gmail.com by Monday evening\, July 20\, 2026 to register.\nThose who register will receive the address.

SUMMARY:Jewish Frameworks for Our Challenging Times
DESCRIPTION:We are living in a time of multiple\, interlocking challenges that we are experiencing psychologically\, socially\, and economically\, and it is no surprise that these catastrophes are also manifesting in our climate patterns. When wildfires in Canada and the upper Midwestern states leave Boston with hazy skies and the smell of smoke for two days\, it’s hard not to feel that we are looking at something close to the end of our world as we’ve known it. We recognize that we are called to pick up our share of the work\, but we are increasingly disoriented and unsure of the efficacy of “tried and true” methods. How does a person of conscience proceed? \nThis is not the first time that the Jewish people have lived through a calamity; we have emerged from ashes and rebuilt many times over. What wisdom can we find in our history and our teachings that can help us get through this moment\, and that we can share with the larger community? \nPlease join Rabbis Nina Cardin\, Natan Margalit\, and Ashira Stevens to explore the frameworks our ancestors used in other times of catastrophe\, as well as new ways of looking at venerable ideas. Come with questions\, and be prepared for discussion! \n \nRabbi Nina Beth Cardin is the chair of the Tzedek Center’s sustainability initiatives for the Conservative/Masorti movement. She also chairs the sustainability initiative of the Baltimore Environmental Sustainability Network and is the author most recently of To Forever Inhabit this Earth: An Ethic of Enoughness. \n \nRabbi Natan Margalit is a scholar with 30 years of experience in teaching\,writing\, organizing and congregational leadership. He has taught at Bard College\, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College\, Hebrew College Rabbinical School\, and now is chair of the Rabbinic Texts Department at the Aleph Ordination Program. He is also Director of the Earth-Based Judaism track of the A.O.P.\, and is founder of the non-profit Organic Torah. He is the author of The Pearl and the Flame: A Journey into Jewish Wisdom and Ecological Thinking (Albion Andalus\, 2022). He lives in Newton\, Massachusetts with his wife and two sons. \n \nRabbi Ashira Stevens (she/her)\, ordained from Hebrew College in 2023\, has served as the rabbi and spiritual leader of Temple Emanu-El of Haverhill and as the Director of Congregational Learning at Temple Beth David of Westwood. She finds deep meaning and delight in making Judaism accessible and relevant for people of all ages and backgrounds\, whether through exploring sacred texts\, sharing meaningful ritual moments\, or appreciating and stewarding the wonders of Creation.

SUMMARY:Data Centers: The New Goliath
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Mothers Out Front Campaign Team for a virtual presentation and action on Data Centers and what we can do to fight them. Thursday\, October 15th from 7pm-8pm.  \nData centers are expanding rapidly and have very little regulation. They are often constructed without public knowledge\, and they use vast amounts of water and  fossil fuels. \nThe pushback against data centers is growing across the United States! \nMore than 70% of Americans do not want a data center near them! \nMothers Out Front in Massachusetts and in 3 other states are joining this pushback. A world with large unregulated data centers is not what we want for our children\, or for anyone. \nWhether one is focused on a healthy climate for children and environmental justice for everyone  – or high electric bills – or rogue AI cyberattacks – or threats to farmlands and wildlife – or protecting our democracy –  this is a fight we think mothers and caregivers should join. \nFor 10 years\, residents in Lowell\, MA living near a massive\, unregulated data center have been experiencing high levels of air and noise pollution.  There are plans underway to expand the data center! We want to be good allies in the community’s fight for their health and well-being. \nSpeakers include: \n\nJake Fortes: Honest Future for Lowell\nTristan Thomas: Alternatives for Community and Environment\nMireille Bejjani: Slingshot\n\nOrganized by the Mothers Out Front Massachusetts Campaign and Environmental Justice teams \nNot sure you’ll be able to make it? Sign up anyway and receive the materials after the presentation. \nFor more information or to get involved\, please contact us at info.ma.state.campaign@mothersoutfront.org

SUMMARY:Plastic Pollution: Health\, Climate\, and Solutions
DESCRIPTION:The problem with plastic goes way past those ubiquitous and annoying plastic straws and bags. When microplastics are being found in fetal tissue\, the scale of the problem isn’t about personal habits but systems–and that’s the scale of the solutions we need. \nDid we mention that plastics *are* fossil fuels? And that they’re the industry’s hedge to stay relevant as the world moves away from oil and gas for energy? It’s time for plastics to go! \n \nWe are excited to have Eileen Ryan\, leader of Beyond Plastics Greater Boston\, join us for a webinar about plastic pollution. She is on the steering committee of Plastic Free Mass. In addition to her work educating people about the perils of plastics she uses her creative talents to make costumes and art as a climate and social justice activist. Eileen lives in Watertown and is the mother of three grown children and a grandmother of two.

SUMMARY:Author Talk: Courtney Humphries - Climate Change and the Future of Boston
DESCRIPTION:Join the Boston Public Library as author Courtney Humphries discusses her new book on the climate impacts facing Boston and the city’s efforts to mitigate and adapt to a changing climate. \nLike many of the world’s iconic coastal cities\, Boston faces potentially severe impacts from climate change. Depending on global emissions\, Boston could face several feet of sea level rise this century\, which would leave many parts of the city subject to tidal and storm flooding. Precipitation events could become more frequent and extreme\, and its already-humid summers could become dangerously hot\, with most days over 90 degrees. Today\, Boston is a booming city with a growing population\, a glittering new waterfront neighborhood\, world-class universities and a strong economy. Its future risks and opportunities related to climate change are shaped by the 400-year environmental\, social and economic history of the city’s development. \nClimate Change and the Future of Boston describes how Boston’s history and current context shape future climate impacts and examines the mitigation and adaptation strategies the city has taken. Boston is a leader in acknowledging the problem of climate change; it has set a goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2050\, among other climate-related goals. It has also developed science-based climate models and undertaken a robust planning process to identify strategies to protect its waterfront from flooding and increase its resilience to other climate-related impacts. Its mayor has embraced a progressive Green New Deal for Boston emphasizing the need for an inclusive and equitable approach to climate mitigation and adaptation. But the city also faces structural challenges\, such as aging infrastructure\, historic racial inequities\, rising gentrification and income inequality and ongoing political and regulatory obstacles that hinder efforts to adapt in an efficient and just manner. She will conclude with a set of forward-looking scenarios about what the future may have in store for the city and the lessons it holds for other coastal cities struggling with these challenges. \nCourtney Humphries\, PhD\, is an interdisciplinary scholar\, teacher\, and award-winning journalist writing about science and the urban environment. \nWhile JCAN-MA does not host events of our own on Saturdays\, we will occasionally promote other organizations’ events that are relevant to our work.

SUMMARY:Spirit in Nature: A Guided Meditation Walk at Wolbach Farm
DESCRIPTION:A guided interfaith meditation walk in nature on the accessible All Persons’ Trail at Wolbach Farm in Sudbury. \n\n\n\n\nSpirit in Nature: A Guided Meditation Walk at Wolbach Farm\nWhatever Wednesday’s midterm election headlines bring\, Thursday’s woods will be waiting. Join us for an interfaith meditative walk led by Rabbi Katy Allen. It’s a time to commune with the spirit of nature using readings of poetry and moments of quiet reflection along Wolbach Farm’s new All Persons’ Trail. \nThis walk is open to all abilities and spiritualities. Together\, we will practice the art of slowing down and paying unhurried attention\, with help from ancient wisdom traditions and nature-based contemplative practices. \nAfterward\, if you’d like to bring a lunch or a snack\, we invite you to say and share a meal together at Wolbach’s Farm’s nearby picnic tables. \nPlease park in the gravel lot on your right as you enter Wolbach Road. Accessible parking spaces are available there\, close to the trailhead. Space is limited\, so please register in advance and consider carpooling. \nThis walk is part of Spirit in Nature\, MassIPL’s ongoing series of guided interfaith meditations in the outdoors. It is co-sponsored by Sudbury Valley Trustees and the Jewish Climate Action Network–MA (JCAN-MA). \nAbout Wolbach Farm\nWolbach Farm in Sudbury began as a dairy farm a century ago. Today it is the headquarters of Sudbury Valley Trustees\, which received the property from John Wolbach in his will. His wish was that the land be kept “predominantly in its natural\, scenic and open condition.” The farm sits next to the Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge. Its All Persons’ Trail opened in 2025 and is a gently graded path of packed stone dust\, built so that people who use wheelchairs\, walkers\, or strollers can enjoy the land too. \nAbout Rabbi Katy Allen\nRabbi Katy Z. Allen is a rabbi\, poet\, and eco-chaplain whose lifelong love of the outdoors shapes her spiritual and creative work. She founded Ma’yan Tikvah – A Wellspring of Hope\, an outdoor congregation\, and co-founded the Jewish Climate Action Network–MA. She has also served as a hospital and hospice chaplain. Her recent book\, A Tree of Life: A Story in Word\, Image\, and Text\, weaves together poetry\, story\, and image. In retirement\, she has devoted herself to poetry. SUMMARY:Light the Way: Energy Justice and the One Billion People Left Behind
DESCRIPTION:A hands-on climate justice project your faith community can do: assembling solar lights for families living without electricity. \nPicture finishing your homework by the light of a kerosene lamp. More than 660 million of our neighbors around the world have no light switch on the wall. Hundreds of millions more do have a connection\, but it is too unreliable to count on. Kerosene is expensive\, dangerous\, and it fills small rooms with smoke and the atmosphere with heat-trapping climate pollution. If you have ever wondered where climate justice meets plain human dignity\, this is one of those places. \nOn Tuesday\, November 17 at 7:00 p.m.\, MassIPL and JCAN-MA host SolarBuddy for an online webinar about energy justice and how to lead a solar light workshop of your own. Join us on Zoom from wherever you are to learn about a hands-on climate justice project your congregation can actually do together\, right in your own fellowship hall\, social hall\, or classroom\, with your youth group and the green team working side by side. \nWhat we’ll cover in the webinar\n\nWhat energy poverty really is\, and what it looks like in a family’s daily life\nHow a small solar light can change things for children and families\, told through stories from the people who hand them out on the ground\nWhat it looks like to host a solar light assembly\, where people of all ages build lights together and write notes to the children who will receive them\nHow all of this connects to clean energy work here in Massachusetts\n\nHelp light the way\nSt. Dunstan’s in Dover is hosting a solar light workshop this February\, and your congregation is invited to host one of its own. The webinar will offer ideas for building a solar light project into Hanukkah\, Advent\, Earth Month in 2027\, or any season of your year together. Come learn how you can help light the way with us.
